After a series of flight disruptions from mid-August, Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) has announced it will temporarily reduce flights among its group carriers until December.

In a statement, MAG Group Managing Director Datuk Captain Izham Ismail apologized to affected passengers affected by flight disruptions affected by group carriers including Malaysia Airlines, Firefly, and Amal starting from August 16.

“Further to my statement issued on 16 August 2024, Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) acknowledges the additional disruptions that took place on the week of 19 August involving Malaysia Airlines, Firefly and Amal services. I personally apologise for the disruption to passenger travel plans and the inconvenience this has caused,” Izham said.

Izham then addressed the group plans to temporarily reduce its network through December 2024.

“As this takes place, MAG will need to temporarily reduce its network between now to December 2024, to execute corrective measures where needed," Izham said. "This is to ensure the longterm reliability of our fleet and robustness of our operations and enhance our ability to ensure our customers on Malaysia Airlines, Firefly and Amal services face minimal disruptions and have the best experience possible flying with us.”

A combination of factors – including weather, technical and manpower challenges, supply chain constraints, and the ongoing normalization of global aviation operations post-pandemic - have been cited as reasons for the flight disruptions. The airline has also stated it has been affected by the delayed delivery of Boeing 737-8 (737 MAX 8) aircraft this year. As a result, the airline has less aircraft available for its planned operations.

Izham and MAG further stated the airline is working closely with its aircraft and engine manufacturers, and suppliers to address supply chain and technical issues.

MAG has further stated affected customers will be notified related to changes of flight bookings as a result of flight cancellations.
